The Staburags cliff of Rauna

A Latvian-wide unique freshwater limestone formation in the Rauna river valley which was created 8-10 thousand years ago by spring water precipitating and cementing limestone in topsoil. The cliff is about 3.5 m high and 17 m wide. Together with the slope Staburags makes a spectacular sight, reminiscent of a kind of waterfall. Since 1966 when the Daugava Staburags was flooded, it has been the only nature monument of this kind in Latvia. Climbing the Staburags is strictly forbidden!

On the right bank of the river Rauna, approximately 3 km (against the current) from the centre of Rauna, Raunas novads
